Fairwind Youth Program
Fast & Fun is entering its fifth year!
This unique program provides sailing safety
training for hundred of "at risk" kids every year.
The kids learn sailing and seamanship skills such as tacking, jibing,
capsize recovery, triming and knot tying. Through these challenging
experiences the children develop important life skills such as increased
self-esteem, communication, teamwork and critical thinking.
The kids sail year-round.
Three days a week different schools send ten or so
students to sail after-school. The kids sail on two 22' keelboats donated by the
Marina del Rey Sheriff Department. The program is free of charge.
During the summer Fast and Fun offers a six week sailing day camp.
There are two shifts daily. Up to thirty kids are in each shift. The
afternoon shifts are for kids from the Venice Boys and Girls Club. The
morning shifts are for kids from visiting Boys and Girls Clubs from all
parts of Los Angeles County. Different clubs participate on different
days including clubs from Pomona Valley, Santa Clarita, East LA, Long
Beach, Santa Monica, Pasadena, Watts/Willowbrook and West San Gabriel
Valley. The kids rotate between sailing, kayaking and beach games. The
summer program features nine
Hobie Cats.
